EDWARD II THE MARTYR, King of England. - B. in 961-63, d. March 18, 978. Firstborn son of King Edgar and his first wife Æthelflæd, baptized at a very young age by Dunstan, bishop of Canterbury, he inherited the kingdom in 975. A strong party of barons opposed his coronation, but Dunstan prevailed.
His reign was troubled by internal strife between the supporters and the opponents of religious reform. He continued with some success the war against the Danish invaders. Loved by his subjects, he fell victim to the envy of his stepmother Ælfthryth, who had him assassinated at Corfe in Dorset in 978, to secure the kingdom for her own son Æthelred. From 1001 he has enjoyed veneration as a holy martyr, as very ancient martyrologies attest.
