Heiricus of Auxerre

ERICO (HEIRICUS) DI AUXERRE

Also known as: Heiric of Auxerre, Eric of Auxerre; Latin: Heiricus Autissiodorensis

HEIRICUS OF AUXERRE. - Benedictine scholastic, b. in 841, d. in 876. Having entered the monastery of St. Germanus of Auxerre at the age of 7, he attended the schools of Ferrières, Laon and Soissons. Having returned to Auxerre, he studied theology under Almo, and then became a master there.

Preserved from him, besides some historical works, are collections of Excerpta from various classical authors and Glosses on logical writings. His principal work is the life in verse of St. Germanus of Auxerre (ed. Acta Sanctorum Iulii, VII, pp. 221-55; PL 124, 1131-1208; MGH, Poetae, III, pp. 421-517).
