FIGLIE DELL'IMMACOLATA CONCEZIONE (Reggio Calabria). — In 1897, Signora Brigida Pastorino laid the foundations of the Society of the F. of the I. C. of Reggio Calabria. Encouraged and assisted by the local archbishop, on 6 November 1898 she founded the first house with nine companions. Two months later the archbishop gave them the religious habit; on 26 April 1901 he approved the Institute, and on 16 July of the same year, its constitutions.
The decree of praise was issued on 11 December 1911; on 10 April 1921 the Institute and, provisionally, its constitutions were approved.
Its purpose is to provide for the religious, moral, and intellectual education of young women through educational institutions, schools, boarding houses, and workshops for girls of every social condition. In 1943 it had 41 houses with 276 sisters.
