FLORENTINA, SANTA

FLORENTINA, Saint. - Sister of St. Leander, St. Fulgentius and St. Isidore, born at Cartagena, died around 612. In 554 she moved to Seville.

A nun in a monastery near the city; for her St. Leander wrote the De institutione virginum, a warm eulogy of virginity and an ascetic-disciplinary manual, accepted as a rule by several women's monasteries. At the request of F., St. Isidore wrote the De fide catholica contra Iudaeos. Feast day June 20. She is patroness of the diocese of Plasencia. Her relics are venerated at the Escorial and at Murcia.
