PHOCAS, BYZANTINE EMPEROR - Column of P., erected by the Roman people in 608 - Rome, Roman Forum.

PHOCAS, BYZANTINE EMPEROR. - Having seized the throne in 602, killed in 610. St. Gregory the Great addressed benevolent expressions of homage to him and urged him to moderation toward his political opponents, which he did not do, hastening his ruin. In 607 P. gave the Roman Church the title of Caput omnium Ecclesiarum. Under the empire of P., Boniface IV dedicated (602) the Pantheon of Agrippa to the Madonna and all the saints. In the Roman Forum a column was dedicated to him (608).
