FOCH, GERMAIN. - Jesuit spiritual writer,
b. 8 Oct. 1854 at Tarbes (Hautes-Pyrénées), d. at
Paris on 9 June 1920, brother of the Marshal of
France Ferdinando Foch. Having entered the Society
of Jesus at the age of eighteen, F. distinguished him-
self by nobility and frankness of character, striving
tirelessly to attain religious perfection.
He made his tertianship under the guidance of the servant of God Paolo
Ginhac at Mourville; he then held the offices of master
of novices (1888–92), spiritual father to the young con-
frères at Uclès in Spain (1892–97) and at Gemert in
Holland (1902–1908), with an interval as rector at Vals.
In his final years he devoted himself to the confessional and to spiri-
tual direction in the residences of Tournas, Pau, Toulouse,
and Montpellier. Distinguished religious and the spiritual
writer Raoul Pius were formed in his school.
He left several ascetical works, promoting the life
of union with God present in the depths of the soul, gen-
erous charity, peace and joy of spirit, the practice
of the evangelical beatitudes, and love of the Cross: Paix
