After a youthful crisis, he entered the Society at the age of 19 on Jan. 4, 1843. After his ordination to the priesthood (1852), he held the offices of novice master, superior, and finally instructor of the third probation at Castres (1868–77), Paray-le-Monial (1877–80), Mourville (1877–80), and Castres (1880–95). He soon gained a reputation for holiness, distinguished by a profound spirit of self-denial and mortification, which, while giving him an austere character, was united with exquisite charity toward others. He was also the spiritual director of many notable souls, including Bl. Marie Thérèse de Soubiran, foundress of the Sisters of Mary Help of Christians; the Servant of God Marie de Jésus, foundress of the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix; the Servant of God Richard Friedl; and General de Sonis. Pius XI introduced his cause of beatification on Feb. 27, 1924.
