GINETTI, MARZIO. — Cardinal, born at Velletri on 6 April 1588 into a noble family originally from Bergamo, completed his studies in Rome where he died on 19 March 1671.
He was secret chamberlain to Paul V. Urban VIII made him majordomo; in the Consistory of 19 January 1626 he created him cardinal in pectore and published the appointment on 30 August 1627. Sent as legate a latere to Cologne (1635) to work with the delegates of the belligerent powers to initiate peace negotiations (Thirty Years' War), despairing of success, especially because of the deep divergences between the Empire and France, he had himself recalled. His mission was then brought to completion by Monsignor Fabio Chigi in the Peace of Westphalia (1648). Returning to Italy, he was given the legation of Ferrara. He later became prefect of the Sacred Congregations and protector of religious orders. He was bishop of Albano (1653–63), of Sabina (1663–66), of Porto (1666–71), and vicar of Rome, a ministry he held under five popes. He is buried in Sant'Andrea della Valle, in the chapel he had built. He had built a splendid palace in Velletri and enlarged the Piazza del Trivio (now Cairoli), where he erected a bronze statue to Urban VIII, of whom he was a great friend, a work by Bernini.
