GINETTI, MARZIO. - Cardinal, born at Velletri on 6 April 1585 into a noble family of Bergamasque origin, he completed his studies in Rome, where he died on 1 March 1671.
He was private chamberlain to Paolo V. Urbano VIII made him majordomo; in the Consistory of 19 January 1626 he created him cardinal in pectore and proclaimed him on 30 August 1627. Sent as legate a latere to Cologne (1635), in order to work with the delegates of the belligerent powers to initiate peace negotiations (Thirty Years’ War), despairing of succeeding, especially because of the profound differences between the Empire and France, he had himself recalled. His mission was subsequently brought to completion by mons. Fabio Chigi in the Peace of Westphalia (1648). Having returned to Italy, he received the legation of Ferrara. He was later prefect of the Sacred Congregations and protector of religious Orders. He was bishop of Albano (1653–63), of the Sabina (1663–66), of Porto (1666–71), and vicar of Rome, an office he held under five pontiffs. He is buried in S. Andrea della Valle, in the chapel he built. In Velletri he had erected a splendid palace and enlarged the Piazza del Trivio (now Cairoli), where he raised for Urbano VIII, to whom he was most devotedly attached, a bronze statue, the work of Bernini.
