GINETTI, MARZIO. - Cardinal, born in Velletri on 6 April 1585 to a noble family originally from the Bergamo area, he completed his studies in Rome, where he died on 1 March 1671.
He was a secret chamberlain of Paul V. Urban VIII made him majordomo; in the Consistory of 19 January 1626 he created him cardinal in pectore and promulgated him on 30 August 1627. Sent as legate a latere to Cologne (1635), so that he might work with the delegates of the warring powers to initiate peace negotiations (Thirty Years' War), despairing of succeeding, above all because of the profound divergences between the Empire and France, he had himself recalled. His mission was then carried through to completion by Monsignor Fabio Chigi in the Peace of Westphalia (1648). Having returned to Italy, he held the legation of Ferrara. He was then prefect of the Sacred Congregations and protector of religious Orders. He was bishop of Albano (1653-63), of Sabina (1663-66), of Porto (1666-71) and vicar of Rome, a ministry he held under five pontiffs. He is buried in S. Andrea della Valle, in the chapel built by him. He had built in Velletri a splendid palace and enlarged the Piazza del Trivio (now Cairoli), where he erected to Urban VIII, of whom he was a very close friend, a bronze statue, the work of Bernini.
