FORMA. - Term used by the ancients to designate the conduit of aqueducts; it later came to indicate any grave dug at ground level, even if divided into several spaces, which, however, can also be indicated by the simple term locus.
Boldetti found in the upper level of the cemetery of Domitilla a large marble slab with the epitaph of a certain Annibonus, who "fecit sibi et suis locum hominibus n. VIII intro formas". A fragment of the slab is now in S. Maria in Trastevere. A tomb with two places was called bicandens, from scandere "to divide", tercandens "for three".
