GABRIEL Y GALÁN, JOSÉ MARÍA. - Spanish poet, b. June 28, 1870 at Frades de la Sierra, d. at Guijo de Granadilla on Jan. 6, 1905. A profound Christian sentiment and a sympathy for country people, with whom he lived and whom he loved in his brief life, inform his work, which has simple motifs and adheres to traditional forms.

In some of his books of poetry he adopted the dialect of Extremadura. In the poem El amo he described the type of the Castilian woman, honest and religious, such as the poet's mother was. He wrote: Castellanas (1902), Extremorías (1902), Campesinas (1904), Nuevos Castellanas (1903). Among the religious lyrics, the one entitled El Cristo de Velázquez is notable. His poems were first made known by Tomás Cámara, bishop of Salamanca.
