Gabriel Severo

GABRIELE SEVERO

GABRIEL SEVERO. - Greek schismatic polemicist (1541-1616). He completed his studies in Padua and, having settled in Venice from 1572, became bishop of Philadelphia and at the same time exarch of the Constantinopolitan patriarchate for the "Orthodox" of the Veneto.

He had only a superficial patristic erudition, the theological value of his works being slight. Among these are remembered the posthumous polemic against the Latins, only partly published (Constantinople 1627), a treatise on the Sacraments, and a tripartite writing of a liturgical character.
