GABRIELE SEVERO. — Greek schismatic polemicist (1541–1616). He pursued his studies at Padua and, having settled in Venice in 1572, became bishop of Philadelphia and at the same time exarch of the Constantinopolitan patriarchate for the “Orthodox” of the Veneto.
He possessed only a superficial patriotic erudition, since the theological merit of his works was slight. Among these are remembered the posthumous polemic against the Latins, published only in part (Constantinople 1627), a treatise on the Sacraments, and a tripartite work of a liturgical character.
