PHILADELPHIA. – A city of Lydia in Asia Minor, northwest of Mount Timolus (today’s Boz Dağ) in the valley of the Coganis. Founded by Attalus II Philadelphus, king of Pergamum (159–138 BC), it came under Roman rule in 133 BC. Rebuilt through the generosity of Tiberius after the earthquake of AD 17, it received the title of “Neocaesarea” (on Tiberius’s coins, Cavigola, Claudius); under Vespasian it is called “Flavia.”
