He is responsible for a body of around 600 publications on the history of Trent, Venice, Ravenna, and Byzantium, as well as on the monuments of Italian civilisation in Crete and the other Aegean islands. All these studies were conducted with analytical rigour, keen intuition, and truly exceptional passion, which made him a meticulous and objective researcher and a conscientious restorer of monuments. Much of his activity was devoted to his role as Superintendent of Monuments in Ravenna, and he also founded the journal *Felix Ravenna*, which made a significant contribution to the study of Christian antiquities. Among his works, one remains fundamental, both for its wide reception and its impact: that published in 1921, entitled *Architettura deuterobizantina in Ravenna*; a study that opened new avenues for the evaluation and dating of a large number of churches in the city and its surrounding countryside.
