GEROLA, GIUSEPPE. - Archaeologist and art scholar, b. in Arsiero on 2 April 1877, d. in Trento on 21 September 1938.
He is credited with a body of approximately 600 publications on the history of Trentino, the Veneto, Ravenna and Byzantium, and on the monuments of Italian civilization in Crete and the other Aegean islands. These studies were all conducted with an analytical spirit, with fine intuition and with truly exceptional passion, which made him a meticulous and objective researcher and a conscientious restorer of monuments. He carried out much of his activity as superintendent of monuments in Ravenna, and to him is also owed the founding of the journal Felix Ravenna, which made a broad contribution to the study of Christian antiquities. Among his studies, the one he published in 1921 and entitled Architettura d'eterobizantina in Ravenna remains fundamental, also because of the wide following it received; a study that opened new paths for the evaluation and dating of a copious number of churches in the city and the territory of Ravenna.
