GIORGIO SICULO. – A Sicilian Anabaptist heretic of the 16th century. Information about his life is extremely scarce. Around 1550 he was probably already in Ferrara, where he preached against the “Lutherans.” There, at the beginning of April of that same year, he was arrested on account of his heretical doctrines and on 23 May was executed.
Of the many books by G. S., the only one that seems to have survived is *Epistola di G. S. servo fidele di Jesu Christo alli cittadinii di Riva di Trento contra il mendato di Francesco Spiera et falsa dottrina de protestanti* (Bologna 1550). In it one finds a blend of rationalistic and mystical motifs similar to those of Servetus, corresponding on the one hand to the common themes of the culture of the time with its confidence in the powers of the human mind, and on the other to the “spiritual” religiosity of the Waldensians.
The identification by some writers of G. S. Renato Camillo (v.) must be rejected.
