GIROLAMO dai LIBRI. – Painter, born in Verona in 1474, died there on 2 July 1555. He began his artistic career under the guidance of his father Francesco, a calligrapher and miniature painter of Gothic taste; subsequently he came under the influence of his fellow citizen Domenico Morone, Mantegna, and Montagna, developing a pleasant repertoire of somewhat lifeless but graceful figures.
A sure modeller, he introduced into the Veronese school a new chromatic delicacy, though without achieving results of profound poetic expression. Most of his works are to be found in the Civic Museum and in the churches of Verona; among these may be cited the Madonna and the Saints in S. Paolo di Campo Marzio (1526), the altarpiece of SS. Nazzaro and Celso, and the Madonna of S. Anastasia (1512).
