GIROLAMO da CREMONA. - Lombard painter active between 1467 and 1483, initially under the influence of local illuminators and subsequently of Mantegna and Liberale da Verona.
Few are his panel paintings, among which characteristic is the Saviour with Four Saints in Viterbo Cathedral (1472); numerous, on the other hand, are the miniatures he executed for Mantua Cathedral and for the Library of Siena Cathedral; some are also preserved in foreign museums. G. da C. attempted to transfer into the quintessentially analytical technique of the illuminators the modes of large-scale painting, not without some turgidity of outlines and masses, but displaying remarkable inventive gifts and a deep, brilliant colouring.
