GREGORY, PIERRE (Tholosanus). - Canonist, b. at Toulouse in 1540, d. at Pont-à-Mousson (Lorraine) in 1597.
He was a renowned professor of law, described as “utriusque iuris et omnium scientiarum peritia magnus,” first at Cahors (1570–80), then at Toulouse (1580–82), and from 1582 at Pont-à-Mousson, where he also served as dean and chancellor. His principal work, *Iuris canonici partitiones in V libros digestae* (Lyon 1594), represents a modest contribution to the systematic treatment of canon law. He also wrote, among other works: *Paratilla iuris canonici* (ibid. 1595), a useful compendium of the preceding; *Commentaria et annotationes in Decretalium proemium* (cf. *Opera omnia*, II, ibid. 1612); *Institutiones breves ac novae rei beneficia-riae* (ibid. 1592); *De usuris libri III* (ibid. 1592); *Tractatus de appellationibus* (posthumous, Urselles 1599). Of his civil law writings, the most notable is the *Syntagma iuris universi* (Lyon 1582), intended as a panoramic view of universal law.
