GONZÁLEZ TÉLLEZ, MANUEL. - Spanish canonist and theologian, of the first half of the 17th century (d. 1640?). A pupil and doctor of the University of Salamanca, from 1635 professor of canon law at the same University and at that of Cuenca. He was an inquisitor in Valladolid, a councillor and prosecutor in the supreme council of the Holy Inquisition, and a lawyer at the royal court.

His Commentaria perpetua in singulos textus quinque librorum Decretalium Gregorii IX (4 vols. in folio, Lyon 1673 and subsequent editions) are to be recommended as much for their philological erudition and elegance of form as for the solidity of their juridical doctrine. Of particular merit is the fact that he treated therein the history of the individual canonical institutions. He also wrote: Concilium Iliberitatum (Lyon 1665).
