GIOVANNI de GRADIBUS (DA GRADI). - Italian jurist, d. at Lyons c. 1525.
He was a renowned professor of canon and civil law, though it is not certain whether at Pavia or at Lyons, where he certainly resided for a long time, or in both these cities. He was also counsellor to Luigi XII, king of France and duke of Milan. He is known and highly deserving in the juridical and editorial field for the editions, mostly first editions, which he prepared and furnished with critical annotations and additions, of the canonists and jurists of the preceding period, such as Guido da Baisio, Giovanni da Imola, Pietro da Ravenna, Egidio de Bellemère, Francesco Zabarella, Domenico da S. Gemignano, Felino Sandeo, Filippo Decio, Cino da Pistoia, and others. He also prepared the edition of a Bible (Lyons 1522), enriched with his own apparatus of concordances and explanatory notes drawn from Giuseppe Flavio’s Antichità gindaiche.
