JOHN OF GRADO (DA GRADI). - Italian jurist, d. at Lyon ca. 1525.
He was a renowned professor of canon and civil law, but it is not certain whether at Pavia or at Lyon, where he certainly lived for a long time, or in both these cities. He was moreover a councillor of Louis XII, king of France and duke of Milan. He is known and very well deserving in the legal and editorial field for the editions, for the most part the first, which he edited and furnished with critical annotations and additions, of the canonists and jurists of the preceding era, such as Guido da Baisio, Giovanni da Imola, Pietro da Ravenna, Egidio de Bellemère, Francesco Zabarella, Domenico da S. Gemignano, Felino Sandeo, Filippo Decio, Cino da Pistoia and others. He also edited an edition of a Bible (Lyon 1522), enriched with his own apparatus of concordances and illustrative notes drawn from the Antichità gindaiche of Josephus Flavius.
