GREGORCIC, SIMON. - Slovenian priest and poet, b. at Vrsno on 15 Oct. 1844, d. at Gorizia on 24 Nov. 1906, struck by apoplexy during the celebration of Mass.

One of the best-known poets of Slovenia, many of his poems, folkloric in tone, are still sung by the people: Let us return to the Alpine paradise; Farewell, Alpine world, etc. His lyric poetry is often inspired by a vivid patriotism and, in its elegiac tendency, mirrors the troubled life, the great sensitivity, and the frail health of G. (cf. The travail [Cloveka nikar]; The lament of the captive bird; To the shepherd). Of his epic compositions, mention should be made of: The oath of Jephthah; The testament of the "hajduk"; The lake of Rabelj. He translated Job, Jeremiah and the Psalms in verse.
