GUIGONE II (GUIGUES). — Prior General of the Carthusians, born at the beginning of the 12th century. Having entered the Carthusian order, he distinguished himself there by virtue and learning, so much so that he was elected prior general. He resigned the high office in 1176 and died with a reputation for sanctity on 27 September 1188.
He is the author of the ascetical work entitled Liber de quatriperito exercitio cellae (PL 153, 787–884). Another work, which appears among those of St. Augustine, may perhaps also be attributed to him: Scala Paradisi seu Tractatus de modo orandi et de vita contemplativa (PL 40, 996–1004).
