HABERT, JOHANNES. - Composer and organist, born in Oberplan on 18 Oct. 1833, died in Gmunden on 1 Sept. 1896.
Founder and editor of the *Zeitschrift für katholische Kirchenmusik*, he engaged in a vigorous polemic with the Cäcilienverein and F. X. Haberl over the excessively narrow artistic approach to sacred music. He published a *Praktische Orgelschule* which went through several editions, the book *Beiträge zur Lehre von der musikalischen Komposition* (Leipzig 1899), 30 masses, three of which with orchestral accompaniment, 2 requiems, motets, psalms and other church music, as well as secular compositions and choruses. A collected edition of his works was issued in Leipzig by the music publisher Breitkopf & Härtel in 1900.
