Habert, Johannes

HABERT, JOHANNES. - Composer and organist, b. at Oberplan on 18 Oct. 1833, d. at Gmunden on 1 Sept. 1896.

Founder and editor of the Zeitschrift für katholische Kirchenmusik, he carried on a strong polemic there with the Cäcilienverein and F. X. Haberl over what he claimed was an excessively narrow direction in the artistic field of sacred music. He published a Praktische Orgelschule that went through several editions, the book Beiträge zur Lehre von der musikalischen Komposition (Leipzig 1899), 30 masses, of which 3 with orchestral accompaniment, 2 requiems, motets, psalms and other church music, as well as secular compositions and choruses. A collection of his works was made in Leipzig by the music publishing house Breitkopf und Härtel in 1900.
