HABERL, FRANZ XAVER. - Musician and musicologist, b. at Oberellenbach on 12 Apr. 1840, d. at Regensburg on 5 Sept. 1910. After entering the seminary at Passau, he was ordained priest in 1862. Until 1867 he was *Kapellmeister* at the cathedral; then he went to Rome, where he remained until 1870 as organist at Santa Maria dell’Anima, beginning profound studies on the history of religious music of the 15th and 17th centuries, which later became the field of his greatest activity.
*Kapellmeister* at Regensburg, in 1874 he founded there the famous *Schola cantorum*, which trained distinguished musicians, a decade before the Cecilian movement for the restoration of sacred music, later implemented by Pius X. Collaborator with numerous periodicals, in 1876 he founded the *Cäcilienkalender*, transformed in 1885 into the *Kirchenmusikalisches Jahrbuch*. He published *Die römische Schola cantorum und die päpstlichen Kapellsänger bis zur Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts* (Regensburg 1887); *Bibliographischer und thematischer Musikkatalog des päpstlichen Kapellarchivs in Vaticana zu Rom* (ibid. 1888) and continued the collection *Musica divina* of Prosper. From the 10th volume he oversaw the monumental edition of the *Opera omnia* of Palestrina produced by the Breitkopf & Härtel firm of Leipzig; he also published part of the works of Orlando di Lasso and Frescobaldi. The new reprint of liturgical chants in addition to the Medicean edition of the *Graduale Romanum*, attributed to Palestrina, brought him trouble among scholars and induced the Holy See to suspend its continuation and dissemination along with many related writings.
