HÄBERLIN, JOHANN BAPTIST IGNAZ. - Priest, b. 27 July 1760 at Horb, d. 15 March 1827 at Karlsruhe. Ordained in 1784, he subsequently became parish priest of the church of S. Martino in Friburgo and episcopal commissioner in Brisgovia. From 1810 he was ecclesiastical ministerial councillor at Karlsruhe.
A radical advocate of Josephinism, he recognized the right of the civil authorities to administer and dispose of
ecclesiastical property without consulting the Supreme Pontiff. In 1812 he published an anonymous pamphlet (An die Souveräne der rheinischen Conföderation über das Recht ihren Staaten eigene Landesbischöfe und eine bischöfliche Diözesaneinteilung nach Gutbefinden zu geben), in which he maintained that the rapid reorganization of the Catholic Church in the states of the Confederation of the Rhine depended upon the individual sovereigns, who were to proceed, without the assistance of concordats or councils, to delimit the new diocesan jurisdictions and appoint bishops.
