HARBOR GRACE, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese on the island of Newfoundland, erected by Pope Pius IX on 10 February 1856. It comprises the bays of Conception, Trinity, Bonavista, Notre-Dame, and White, together with part of the Labrador coast.
The diocese has an area of 20,000 sq. km. and a population of 145,000 inhabitants, of whom 25,000 are Catholics (1949). It has 24 parishes served by 28 diocesan priests; it has a seminary. The first bishop of the diocese was Msgr. J. Dalton, consecrated on 12 May 1856 and deceased in 1869. The Cathedral is dedicated to St. John; the diocese is a suffragan of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
