Ilhéos, Diocese of

ILHÉOS, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in the State of Bahia in Brazil, erected by Pope Pius X on 20 October 1913 through the dismemberment of the territory of the archdiocese of San Salvatore di Bahia, of which it is a suffragan.

The diocese has an area of 57,210 sq. km., with 650,000 inhabitants, of whom 648,000 are Catholics. It has 37 parishes with 21 diocesan priests and 9 religious priests, 1 seminary, 3 men’s and 3 women’s religious communities (1949).
