Also known as: Isidore the Younger

ISIDORE OF MILETUS. - Name of two architects. I. THE ELDER was active during the 6th century in Constantinople, together with Anthemius of Tralles; placed in a subordinate position to him, he is said to have taken part in the construction of the church of St. Sophia. He is remembered above all as a distinguished technician and mathematician.

More definite and circumscribed is the activity of I. THE YOUNGER, nephew of the preceding, himself also an architect active in Constantinople in the 6th century. His works: the rebuilding of the dome of St. Sophia, which collapsed following the earthquake of 558, the architecture of the church of the Holy Apostles, also in Constantinople, and many buildings at Zenobia on the Euphrates.
