JARICOT, PAULINE-MARIE. - Foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Born in Lyon on July 22, 1799, died there on Jan. 9, 1862. She belonged to a good family of industrialists and had a somewhat worldly youth. She changed her life after a serious illness. Enlightened and urged on by her brother Phileas, later a missionary, she began, among young working women, that movement of prayers and collections of offerings which on May 3, 1822 expanded to become the great relief society for the Catholic missions.
Jaricot's organizational spirit also manifested itself in the founding of the Living Rosary. Anticipating her times, she carried out a grand initiative for workers, with the purchase of the Rustrel workshops, in the Basses-Alpes, to be run as a cooperative. It was a disastrous undertaking because of people who deceived her, and from that failure the whole life of Jaricot was embittered. Sustained by a superhuman faith, she embraced the cross with love, and immolated herself for the beloved missions and for the good of all souls. The cause for her beatification is in progress.
