Joule, James Prescott

JOULE, JAMES PRESCOTT. - B. at Salford near Manchester on 24 Dec. 1818, d. at Sale (Cheshire) on 11 Oct. 1889. Together with the Germans J. R. Mayer and H. v. Helmholtz, he is considered a founder of the theory of heat.

On the basis of numerous and accurate experiments, some of them fundamental for the progress of the sciences, he determined the mechanical equivalent of heat (1843) and the law, which bears his name, on the thermal effects of the electric current (v. UNITÀ FISICHE). In his writings he admires the wisdom of God the creator in the laws that govern the universe.
