MENDELEEV (Mendeléeff), Dmitri Ivanovich. - Chemist, b. at Tobolsk (Russia) on 7 February 1834, d. at St. Petersburg on 2 February 1907.

From 1856 he taught chemistry at the University of St. Petersburg. He carried out research especially in inorganic chemistry. He wrote the Principles of Chemistry (1868-69), a work that exercised a notable influence on the development of inorganic chemistry. He is known especially for the famous classification of the chemical elements that bears his name (v. CHIMICA, III, Classificazione periodica degli elementi).

Because of his liberal ideas he did not enjoy the sympathies of the Tsar.
