KORHOGO, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. — In the northern part of the Ivory Coast, erected as an apostolic prefecture in 1911 by separating its territory from the Vicariate of the Ivory Coast, now Abidjan (q.v.); it has an area of 148,521 sq. km. and a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants.
The progress of the apostolate here is rather slow, due to fetishism, which has a strong organization, the great influence of Islam, and polygamy. The mission is directed by the Fathers of the Society of African Missions. There are 11,021 Catholics and 3,019 catechumens (1949), distributed in 10 quasi-parishes, 1 primary station, and 5 secondary stations. There are 22 priests and 1 brother of the African Missions, and 17 European sisters, assisted by 104 indigenous catechists. There are 13 schools, all primary, with 901 pupils; 4 orphanages with 80 children; and 9 dispensaries.
