KORHOGO, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - In the northern part of the Ivory Coast, erected as an apostolic prefecture in 1911, its territory having been detached from the vicariate of the Ivory Coast, now Abidjan (v.); it has an area of 148,521 sq. km. and a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants.
The progress of the apostolate there is rather slow, owing to fetishism, which has a strong organization there, the great influence of Islam, and polygamy. The mission is directed by the fathers of the Society of African Missions. The Catholics number 11,021 and the catechumens 3,010 (1949), distributed among 10 quasi-parishes, 1 principal station, and 315 secondary stations. There are 22 fathers and one brother of the African Missions working there, together with 17 European sisters, assisted by 104 native catechists. There are 13 schools, all elementary, with 901 pupils, 4 orphanages with 80 children, and 9 dispensaries.
