KADUNA, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - Created as an apostolic prefecture on 24 Aug. 1911. On 18 July 1929 the territories of the apostolic vicariate of Western Nigeria north of the Niger and Benue rivers, detached from that vicariate, were assigned to the prefecture of Western Nigeria, which was then called Northern Nigeria; on 9 Apr. 1934 this prefecture was divided into two, called K. GIOSUÈ (v.). By decree of 28 Apr. 1943 the French territory of Niger was assigned to the new apostolic prefecture of Niamey.

Total area 125,000 sq. km.; population approx. 6,000,000, of whom 4,000,000 are Muslims. Catholics number 17,125, distributed among 11 principal stations and 61 secondary stations, evangelized by 27 Fathers of the Society of African Missions, assisted by 15 Irish sisters. There are 264 cate-

chists. Elementary schools: 7, with 122 pupils; secondary schools: 2, with 219; vocational schools: 2, with 111; teacher-training schools: 4, with 21.
