JOS, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. — Mission founded recently (1934) with territory detached from northern Nigeria (v. KADUNA), comprising
the civil provinces of Plateau, Bauchi, and Bornu, together with the parts of those of Benue and Adamawa north of the Benue River, for a total of 300,000 sq. km.
Of a population of 4,400,000, the Catholics number 14,227, and the catechumens 6,551. There are 38 missionaries; 293 catechists; 218 teachers; 13 primary stations, 107 secondary ones; 13 churches, 93 chapels; 96 elementary schools with 4,540 pupils, 5 secondary schools with 198 pupils; 1 normal school with 124 pupils; 21 dispensaries; 1 hospital.
By decree of 14 July 1959, the entire territory of Adamawa Province was detached in order to form, together with other areas of the apostolic prefecture of Oturipo and the diocese of Bula, the apostolic prefecture of Yola.
