JOS, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. — A mission recently founded (1934) with territory detached from Northern Nigeria (v. KADUNA), comprising the civil provinces of Plateau, Bauchi and Bornu, together with parts of those of Benue and Adamawa to the north of the Benue River, for a total of 300,000 sq. km.
Out of a population of 4,400,000 inhabitants, Catholics number 14,227, catechumens 6,551. There are 38 missionaries; 293 catechists; 218 teachers; 13 primary stations, 107 secondary; 13 churches, 93 chapels; 96 elementary schools with 4,540 pupils, 5 middle schools with 198 pupils; 1 normal school with 124 pupils; 21 dispensaries; 1 hospital.
By decree of 14 July 1950, the entire territory of the province of Adamawa was detached to form, together with other areas from the Apostolic Prefecture of Ootkpo and the Diocese of Bula, the Apostolic Prefecture of Yola.
