JOSCELLINO (Joslenus, Gauslenus) of SOISSONS. - Teacher of dialectic at Mont Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, a contemporary of Abelardo, died 25 Oct. 1151. He was archdeacon (1115) and bishop (1125) of Soissons. Counsellor to King Luigi il Giovine, he took part in the Council of Sens (1140) against Abelardo and in that of Paris (1147) against Gilberto de la Porrée.
According to G. di Salisbury (Metalogicon, 17), J. « universalitatem rebus in unum collectit tribuit, et singulis eamdem demit », a thesis that would seem identical with that which Boezio (In Porph. a se transl., 1: PL 64, 85) attributes to Aristotle and which was also professed by G. Porretano. Cousin (Ower. inéd. d'Abelard, Paris 1836) published, attributing it to Abelardo, an anonymous De generibus et speciebus in which the same theory is maintained, and which some therefore regard as the work of J. or of one of his disciples.
