JOSCELLINO (Joslenus, Gauslenus) of Soissons. - Master of dialectic at Mont-Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, a contemporary of Abelard, d. 25 Oct. 1151. He was archdeacon (1115) and bishop (1125) of Soissons. A counsellor of King Louis the Younger, he took part in the Council of Sens (1140) against Abelard and in that of Paris (1147) against Gilbert de la Porrée.

According to G. of Salisbury (Metalogicon, 17), J. "attributed universality to things collected into one, and removed it from individual things," a thesis that would seem identical to the one that Boethius (In Porph. a se transl., 1: PL 64, 85) attributes to Aristotle and that was also professed by G. Porretanus. Cousin (Ouvr. inéd. d'Abélard, Paris 1836) published, attributing it to Abelard, an anonymous De generibus et speciebus in which the same theory is maintained, and which some therefore consider to be the work of J. or of one of his disciples.
