RIPATRANSONE, Johannes de (John of Ripatransone). - Franciscan theologian, who between 1354 and 1357 lectured on the Sentences in Paris.
In cod. Vat. lat. 1084, f. 106 he is called "supersubtilis doctor". A Scotist to begin with, he goes well beyond Duns Scotus, so that G. Gerson, Peter of Candia and others treat him as the founder of a school. He was one of the most resolute asserters of the thesis that God in his omnipotence can create an infinite world. Besides the unpublished commentary on book I of the Sentences, there remain by him the Determinationes studied by A. Combes. One of the principal sources on his thought is the Lectura super Sententias of P. of Candia, studied by F. Ehrle.
