GIOVANNI da RIPATRANSONE (de Ripa, de Ripis, de Rupa, talora de Marchia). - Franciscan theologian, who commented on the Sentences in Paris between 1354 and 1357.
In cod. Vat. lat. 1084, f. 106 he is called « supersubtilis doctor ». A Scotist at the outset, he goes far beyond Duns Scoto, so much so that G. Gerson, Pietro di Candia, and others treat him as the founder of a school. He was one of the most resolute proponents of the thesis that God, in His omnipotence, can create an infinite world. Besides the unpublished commentary on bk. I of the Sentences, his Determinationes, studied by A. Combes, survive. One of the principal sources for his thought is the Lectura super Sententias of P. di Candia, studied by F. Ehrle.
