GENEVIEVE, Saint. - She is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on Jan. 3. The biography composed between the 6th and 8th centuries is variously assessed by scholars both as to the time of composition and as to the historical value to be attributed to it. G. was born at Nanterre around 420.

At the suggestion of Bishop Germanus of Auxerre she consecrated her virginity to God, and after the death of her parents she went to Paris. She lived in strict penance, eating sparingly, fasting often, and taking an active part in the religious and political life of the time. She worked many miracles. Very devoted to the martyr Dionysius, she had a basilica built over his tomb. She died at the age of 80 around the year 500 and was buried in the church of St. Peter in Paris. Clovis built a basilica in her honor.
