GERMANO, bishop of PARIS, saint - Surviving bell tower of the church of St-G. des Prés in Paris (ca. 1255, rebuilt in its upper part in the mid-19th century).
GERMANUS, Saint, Bishop of Paris. - Born in Autun toward the end of the 5th century. After escaping an attempt to poison him, he was entrusted to a relative named Scupilio, by whom he was educated and set on the path to an ecclesiastical career. Bishop Agrippinus ordained him priest, and his successor Nectarius elected him abbot of the monastery of St. Symphorian. There G. firmly reclaimed the property of his monastery and championed holiness of morals against the laxity of the nobles, but he had to suffer at the hands of the monks because of the austerity and poverty he wished to impose on them.
In 556, through the intervention of King Childebert, he was elected bishop of Paris. He proved zealous, preaching assiduously, visiting the diocese, for whose good he also held several synods, and always living an austere and penitential life. Two letters are attributed to him, which are precious documents for knowledge of the Gallican liturgy; the first deals with the formulary of the Mass, the other with the ceremonies and liturgicalvestments. He died at nearly eighty years of age on 28 May 576 and was buried in the portico of the church of St. Vincent, which was afterward called St. G. [St. Germain] after him. Venantius Fortunatus wrote his biography.
