LALLEMANT, Jacques – Philippe. – Jesuit, theologian, and writer, b. at St-Valéry-sur-Somme on 18 Sept. 1660, d. in Paris on 28 Aug. 1748. As editor of the *Mémoires de Trévoux*, he devoted his entire scholarly activity to defending his Order, which was under attack from all sides, and to combating Gallicanism and Jansenism.
Of the series of 31 works published, most of them anonymous or under pseudonyms, the following deserve mention, also for their wide circulation: *Le père Quesnel séditieux dans ses Réflexions* (Brussels 1704); *Jansenius condamné par l’Église* (ibid. 1705); *Le véritable esprit des nouveaux disciples de St Augustin* (4 vols., ibid. 1705); but above all: *Entretiens au sujet des affaires par rapport à la religion* (9 vols., Paris 1713–23) and *Réflexions morales avec des notes sur le Nouveau Testament traduit en français* against the anonymous work of Quesnel (12 vols., ibid. 1713–25), to which the Fathers Bouhours, Languedoc, and Michel also contributed. The first edition sold out within three months, as the Jansenists hastened to buy it up in order to remove it from circulation. A new edition was produced by Feller (5 vols., Liège 1793), and other partial editions and various translations followed. Lallemand was also the author of *Le sens propre et littéral des Psaumes de David* (Paris 1708) and a new translation of *L’Imitation de Jésus-Christ* (ibid. 1740) with notes, which went through many editions and versions.
