LAODICEA (Laodicea Combusta) in Lycaonia. — A series of Christian inscriptions has been discovered there, important also for the hierarchy, among which the most notable is that of Bishop Marcus Julius Eugenius, son of Cyrillus Celer of Couessos, a senator of L., who, after serving in the officium of the governor of Pisidia, at the time of the persecution of Maximinus, had been forced to abandon military service and endure tortures inflicted upon him by the governor Diogenes; he was promoted to the episcopate of L. and governed it for 25 years, rebuilding and decorating the church and its furnishings.
