LANSING. - City and diocese in the State of Michigan (United States).
It has an area of 8,713 square miles and comprises the counties of Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Livingston, St. Joseph, Shiawassee, and Van Buren, all in the State of Michigan.
Out of a population of 1,001,648 inhabitants, it has 90,000 Catholics, distributed among 71 parishes. It also has 10 chapels, 19 missions, and 5 stations. There are 121 diocesan priests and 31 regular clergy; the diocese has 5 male and 13 female religious communities, a major seminary (St. Benedict) at Brighton and Cupertino College at Eaton Rapids; also Nazareth College, 20 diocesan and parochial high schools, and 41 parochial schools; in 1949 there were 1,470 conversions.
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Ecclesiarum in orbe of 22 May 1937, by the division of the diocese of Detroit, to which, on the same date, it was assigned as a suffragan by the apostolic constitution Ad aeternam Christifidium salutem.
The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
