JACQUES LELONG. — Oratorian, biblical scholar, and bibliographer, born in Paris on 19 April 1664, died there on 13 August 1721. Librarian of the Oratory of St Honoré, Lelong worked there with zeal for 22 years, expanding the precious collection of books and compiling catalogues of them.
Noteworthy among his bibliographical works are the following two: Bibliotheca sacra seu syllabus omnium ferme sacrae Scripturae editionum ac revisionum (2 vols., Paris 1709; subsequently updated until 1778–90, it remains the richest bibliographical mine on the subject); Bibliothèque historique de la France (definitive edition in Paris 1768–78).
