LE HIR, ARTHUR-MARIE. - Exegete and Hebraist, b. at Malvaise (Finistère) on 5 Dec. 1811, d. at Paris on 18 Jan. 1868. He studied at the Seminary of St-Sulpice, where he subsequently taught theology, Sacred Scripture, and Hebrew. Among his pupils was E. Renan, who portrays him as a great scholar and a saint in his Souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse (Paris 1883, pp. 273-77).
Le H. composed many works, nearly all of which were published posthumously. Worth noting are: Les prophètes d'Israël (Paris 1868); Etudes bibliques avec introduction et sommaires (2 vols., ibid. 1869); Le livre de Job, traduction sur l'hébreu et commentaire... (ibid. 1873); Les Psaumes traduits de l'hébreu en latin, analysés et annotés en français... (ibid. 1876); Les trois grands prophètes, Isaïe, Jérémie, Ezéchiel : analyses et commentaires... (ibid. 1877); Le Cantique des Cantiques, avec traduction spéciale sur l'hébreu et commentaire... (ibid. 1883).
