La Libre Belgique

Major Catholic daily newspaper in the French language, the most widely circulated in Belgium, founded in 1883, owned by the Jourdain family.

Until 1914 it bore the title *Le Patriote*, and it vigorously championed the struggle for educational freedom. During the First World War, published clandestinely under the title *La Libre Belgique clandestine*, it sustained Belgian morale under German occupation. After the Second World War it campaigned for the return to the throne of King Leopold III. It is, among Belgian newspapers, the best informed. In the social sphere it tends toward conservatism.
