LA LIBRE BELGIQUE. - Major French-language Catholic daily newspaper, the most widely circulated in Belgium, founded in 1883, owned by the Jourdain family.

Until 1914 it bore the title Le patriote, and fought vigorously in the struggle for freedom of education. During the First World War, published clandestinely under the title La libre Belgique clandestine, it sustained the morale of the Belgians under German occupation. After the Second World War it fought for the return to the throne of King Leopold III. It is, among Belgian newspapers, the best informed. In the social field it is conservative in tendency.
