LIBERIUS, Saint. - Little is known of his life. He succeeded, it seems, Pavatius in the bishopric of Le Mans, which he governed for 49 years. He worked much for the good of the diocese, promoting the construction of as many as 17 churches and increasing the number of the clergy. He died on 9 June 397, attended by St. Martin of Tours, who also arranged his burial in the church of the apostles Peter and Paul, where his two immediate predecessors had also found rest. His tomb became a destination for pilgrimages, and miracles were also worked there. In 836 the body was transferred to Paderborn. In the Roman Martyrology he is commemorated on 23 July.
