LONGINO, SANTO

LONGINUS, Saint. - Traditional name of the Roman soldier, probably derived from the Greek λάγη "lance," who pierced the side of Jesus on Calvary (John 19:34). According to a tradition already attested by St. Gregory of Nyssa, L. would be the same centurion who, at the Savior's death, recognized his divinity (Mark 15:39).

A very legendary Passio (PG 93, 1545-60) narrates that L., having converted to Christianity, abandoned the army and withdrew to Cappadocia, whence he came, preaching the new faith. Through the envy of the Jews, however, he was accused before Pilate, who had him beheaded. According to another version, on the other hand, L. came to Italy bringing some drops of the most precious blood of Jesus, and was martyred near Mantua. He is commemorated on March 15.
