LUCIUS. - Console romano ricordato in I Mach. 15, 16-24 come autore di una lettera al re d'Egitto, Tolomeo, in cui informa che il sommo sacerdote ebreo Simone ha rinnovato l'alleanza con i Romani e impone di consegnare al detto Simone i ribaldi giudei fuggiti dalla Palestina.This circular letter was also sent by L. to Demetrius king of Syria, to Attalus king of Pergamon, to Ariarathes king of Cappadocia, to Arsaces king of the Parthians and to other allies of the Romans, as well as, for information, to Simon. Modern scholars (Ricciotti, Vaccari) identify our man as L. Calpurnius Piso, consul in 139 B.C., others as L. Caecilius Metellus Calvus, consul in 142 B.C., or as the praetor L. Valerius, of whom Josephus speaks in Antiq. Jud., XIV, 8, 5.
