MAJUNGA, VICARIATO APOSTOLICO di. — In the northeastern part of Madagascar, erected on 15 March 1923 with territory detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of northern Madagascar.
The northern boundaries of M. were marked by the Loza and Maevarano Rivers. Subsequent adjustments of territories reduced its area. In the south, on 8 Jan. 1938, it ceded part of its territory to the new Apostolic Prefecture of Morondava; on 25 May 1939, to the mission sui iuris of Miarinarivo, elevated to a vicariate; and on 10 July 1947, to the Apostolic Prefecture of Ambanja, now an Apostolic Vicariate.
The area is approximately 110,000 sq. km., and the inhabitants approximately 360,000, of whom 26,660 are Catholics, entrusted to the Fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, numbering 40, together with 4 diocesan priests. It has 7 women’s religious communities, 81 educational institutions, and 7 charitable and welfare works (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 680).
