MAPPALICUS, Saint, Martyr. — An African who suffered during the persecution under Decius, he is commemorated in the Carthaginian Calendar on April 19, and in the Hieronymian Martyrology on the 17th and 18th of the same month together with others.
There is no *Passio* of M., but St Cyprian mentions him in a letter, holding him up for admiration to the confessors confined in prison. From a letter written by Lucian to Celerinus, however, we learn that M. died under torture during interrogation; and finally, in a letter written to the clergy of Rome, St Cyprian, contrasting his own upright conduct with the rashness of Lucian, relates that he never dared to give any libellus of peace to the *lapsi*, not even to his own mother, limiting himself to praying that the brethren would show her mercy.
