MAPPALICO, SANTO, MARTIRE

MAPALICO, Saint, Martyr. - An African, he perished during the persecution of Decius, and is commemorated in the Carthaginian Calendar on April 19, and in the Jeronymian Martyrology on the 17th and 18th of the same month together with others.

No Passio of M. exists; St. Cyprian speaks of him instead in a letter, holding him up to the admiration of the confessors shut up in the prisons. From the letter written by Lucian to Celerinus, on the other hand, we learn that M. died under torture during the interrogation; and finally, in the letter written to the clergy of Rome, St. Cyprian, contrasting his upright conduct with the rash conduct of Lucian, reports that he never dared to give any libellus of peace to the lapsi, not even to his own mother, limiting himself to beseeching the brethren to show her mercy.
