MAGNUS OF FABRATERIA, Saint. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 19 August as a martyr of Fabriteria vetus, today Ceccano, where in antiquity there existed a church dedicated to him, later destroyed by the Saracens. He is also commemorated on the same day in the Gelasian Sacramentary.
The Passio (BHL, 5167-74), highly legendary, relates that M. was born in Apulia to pagan parents, and as a youth was a shepherd. Hearing the Gospel one day, he was converted and was baptized by Bishop Redento. When his father died, he sold all his possessions and distributed the proceeds to the poor. When persecution broke out he was arrested by the consul Severino; he managed to escape and went to Naples, where he was the guest of St. Januarius. Then, wishing to go to Rome, he stopped instead at Fabriteria, where, after the persecution of Decius and then of Valerian broke out, he was killed.
