MAGNUS of FABRATERIA, St. — He is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on 19 Aug. as a martyr of Fabrateria vetus, today Ceccano, where in antiquity there existed a church dedicated to him, later destroyed by the Saracens. He is also commemorated on the same day in the Gelasian Sacramentary.
The *Passio* (BHL, 5167–74), highly legendary, relates that M. was born in Apulia to pagan parents and as a youth was a shepherd. One day, hearing the Gospel, he converted and was baptized by Bishop Redemptus. After his father’s death, he sold all his goods and distributed the proceeds to the poor. When persecution broke out, he was arrested by the consul Severinus; he managed to escape and went to Naples, where he was hosted by St. Januarius. Intending then to go to Rome, he instead stopped at Fabrateria, where, during the persecutions of Decius and later Valerian, he was killed.
