MAGNO of SENS. — Archbishop and theologian, b. in the second half of the 8th century, d. at Sens in 818. Having come to Rome with Charlemagne, he was consecrated archbishop of Sens by Leo III; he received honorary assignments (missus dominicus to Orléans, Langres, and elsewhere) from the Emperor, to whom he dedicated his Notae iuris (PL 102, 983–94).
When Charlemagne submitted a question concerning the rites of Baptism to all the archbishops of the Empire, M. replied with a libellus de mysteriis Baptismatis (PL 102, 981–83), in which he briefly set forth the symbolic significance of the three Sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist): it contains some observations on the Mystical Body.
